Chapter 13
Now It's Your Turn
Tomorrow morning...
Long before most of your friends are awake...
You'll climb out of bed.
You'll pull on a pair of athletic shoes that have already seen too many miles.
You'll grab your water jug.
Your music.
Your instrument.
Then you'll climb aboard a school bus with dozens of other students headed toward another day of band camp.
In a few minutes...
You'll step onto a hot parking lot or football field.
The pavement will already be warming beneath your feet.
Someone will blow a whistle.
Your drum major will call the band to attention.
Your section leader will begin stretching.
Another rehearsal will begin.
To most people...
It will look like just another day at band camp.
But now you know something many people never will.
When your band director asks for better posture...
They're asking you to continue a tradition that began centuries ago on military parade grounds.
When the drumline plays a cadence...
You're hearing rhythms whose ancestors once echoed across Revolutionary War battlefields.
When your band marches onto a football field...
You're continuing a tradition that began with the Marching Illini in 1907.
When you perform at halftime...
You're part of a tradition that has entertained generations of Americans.
When you travel to a marching contest...
You're joining hundreds of thousands of students who, on that very same Saturday, are stepping onto football fields from California to Florida...
From Texas to Maine...
From Washington to South Carolina...
All striving for exactly the same thing.
Not perfection.
Progress.
Not simply trophies.
Excellence.
Not just better performances.
Better people.
You may never perform in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
You may never march in the Tournament of Roses Parade.
You may never stand on the field at the Drum Corps International World Championships.
You may never perform at a Bands of America Grand National Championship.
And that's perfectly okay.
Because the greatest lesson marching band has to offer isn't found in New York...
Or Pasadena...
Or Indianapolis.
It's found right where you're standing.
On a hot practice field.
Beside your friends.
Learning that success is built one rehearsal at a time.
One set at a time.
One measure at a time.
One note at a time.
One step at a time.
One Saturday at a time.
Years from now...
You probably won't remember every halftime show.
You'll forget most of the scores.
You'll forget many of the judges' comments.
You'll even forget some of the music.
But you'll never forget the people standing beside you.
The bus rides.
The laughter.
The victories.
The disappointments.
The long rehearsals.
The impossible days.
The moments when your band accomplished something together that no one could have done alone.
Because that's what marching band has always been.
It was never just about music.
It was never just about marching.
It was never just about football.
Or contests.
Or trophies.
It has always been about teaching young people that ordinary individuals, working together toward an extraordinary goal, can accomplish remarkable things.
That's why this story has lasted for more than two thousand years.
Every generation has inherited it.
Added something to it.
Then passed it on.
Now...
It's your turn.
Someday, another sixteen-year-old will step off another school bus carrying another instrument case.
They'll hear another whistle.
Another drum cadence.
Another director asking for "one more time."
They probably won't know your name.
Just as you may never know the names of the Roman musicians...
The Revolutionary War drummers...
The orphan boys on Thompson Island...
The directors who built the first school bands...
Or the pioneers who created the first marching contests.
But they will inherit what all of you built together.
That's how traditions survive.
Not because they're written in history books.
Because each new generation chooses to carry them forward.
So tomorrow morning...
When you step onto that hot pavement...
Take just one moment before rehearsal begins.
Look around.
Really look.
At the freshmen.
The seniors.
The drum majors.
The color guard.
The percussion section.
The brass.
The woodwinds.
Your directors.
Your parents filling water coolers.
The volunteers moving equipment.
The buses waiting to carry you to another contest.
Then remember this.
You are not simply attending band camp.
You are standing inside one of the greatest traditions in American education.
One that has inspired millions of students...
Strengthened thousands of communities...
Created lifelong friendships...
Built remarkable careers...
And changed countless lives.
History isn't something that only happened yesterday.
Sometimes...
History begins again...
The moment a sixteen-year-old picks up an instrument...
And takes the first step.
