Nobody Looks Cool at Band Camp
Not the drum major.
Not the section leader.
Not the senior who swears they're cool.
By Day 3 everyone looks like they lost a fight with the sun, a sprinkler system, and a washing machine.
Embrace it.
Band camp is not a fashion show.
It's a survival show.
2. Sunscreen Is Not Optional
You think:
"I'll be fine."
The sun thinks:
"Challenge accepted."
Without sunscreen, you'll spend Friday looking like a boiled lobster playing third trumpet.
Wear it.
Reapply it.
Then apply it again.
3. Hydration Is Your New Religion
Drink water.
Then drink more water.
Then drink water because you're tired of drinking water.
If your band director asks whether you've been hydrating, the correct answer is:
"Yes, and I have become 73% water."
4. Never Fall in Love at Band Camp
Let's save everyone some time.
Band Camp Crushes have the life expectancy of a fruit fly.
By the time school starts, one of you will be dating a soccer player and the other will be pretending it never happened.
Focus on marching.
The saxophone section already has enough drama.
5. Learn the Names of the Seniors
These people control your future.
Need help?
Senior.
Lost your music?
Senior.
Need directions to the bathroom?
Senior.
Need someone to explain why the trombones are running?
Senior.
Be nice to seniors.
They know things.
6. The Director Sees Everything
You think you're hiding.
You're not.
The director saw you talking.
The director saw you texting.
The director saw you eating a Pop-Tart during drill.
The director somehow saw all of this from 200 yards away.
Band directors possess powers science cannot explain.
7. Fifteen Minutes Early Is On Time
On time is late.
Five minutes early is late.
Ten minutes early is suspiciously late.
Fifteen minutes early means you're finally thinking correctly.
If the director beats you to the parking lot...
You may have just volunteered for equipment crew.
8. Your Feet Are Going to File a Formal Complaint
Day One:
"This is fun!"
Day Three:
"Why do I have feet?"
Day Five:
"I would like to negotiate a peace treaty with my shoes."
Bring good socks. Three pairs a day.
Your future self will thank you.
9. The Band Room Has Its Own Ecosystem
You will discover:
- The percussion kingdom
- The brass empire
- The woodwind republic
- The mysterious land of color guard
Each group has customs, traditions, and inside jokes nobody understands.
Do not be alarmed.
This is normal.
Mostly.
10. One Day You'll Be the Senior Everyone Looks Up To
Right now you're the freshman.
You don't know where to stand.
You don't know where rehearsal starts.
You don't know why everyone keeps yelling "SET!"
But one day you'll be the person helping the next freshman survive.
And you'll realize something:
Band camp wasn't really about learning drill.
Or music.
Or marching.
It was about becoming part of something bigger than yourself.
