Every August...

Every August, something remarkable happens across America.

Long before the first school bell rings, yellow buses begin pulling into parking lots from California to Maine.

One by one, teenagers step off carrying instrument cases.

Some are freshmen attending their very first band camp.

Some are seniors returning for one last season.

Some are excited.

Some are nervous.

Some are wondering if they made the right decision.

Within minutes, familiar sounds begin filling the air.

A whistle.

A drum cadence.

"Band... ten-hut!"

"Mark time... march!"

"Again!"

To every student standing on that practice field, it all feels perfectly normal.

After all...

"This is just what marching bands do."

But have you ever stopped to wonder...

It didn't even begin in America.

It began more than two thousand years ago...
