Chapter 6
The Trumpet in the Distance
The trail beyond the sign was unlike anything the students expected.
For years they had attended Walton Valley High School.
For years they had marched on the field, rehearsed in the band room, and walked the same hallways.
Yet none of them had ever seen this place.
The path twisted through a grove of towering oak trees.
Branches arched overhead like the ceiling of a tunnel.
The morning sunlight filtered through the leaves in scattered patches.
Everything felt strangely quiet.
Almost forgotten.
Alyssa walked in front.
Tyler followed close behind.
Mia carried her notebook.
Jake carried absolutely nothing useful.
As usual.
"Just so we're clear," Jake said, "if we find ghosts, I'm running."
"There are no ghosts," Mia replied.
"That's exactly what someone about to encounter ghosts would say."
Tyler groaned.
Alyssa ignored them.
Something ahead had caught her attention.
The trail widened.
At the edge of a clearing stood an old stone marker.
It wasn't large.
Maybe three feet tall.
Weathered by decades of rain and wind.
The students approached carefully.
Words had been carved into the stone.
Some were difficult to read.
Others remained clear.
Alyssa brushed away dirt.
Then read aloud.
Walton Valley Band Camp
Established 1958
The four students exchanged surprised looks.
"Band camp?" Jake asked.
"Here?"
Tyler nodded slowly.
"My grandfather used to talk about an old rehearsal area."
"You never mentioned that."
"I thought it was just stories."
The clearing stretched out before them.
Faint outlines were still visible in the grass.
Rectangles.
Straight lines.
Shapes that almost looked like old rehearsal blocks.
As if generations of students had once practiced there.
Long before the stadium existed.
Long before the current band room.
Long before any of them were born.
Mia walked toward the center of the clearing.
Then stopped.
"There are footprints."
Everyone gathered around.
She was right.
Several footprints crossed the soft earth.
Not many.
But enough.
Tyler crouched beside one.
His eyes widened.
"The same tread pattern."
"Ethan?"
Tyler nodded.
"Ethan."
Alyssa felt excitement building.
For days they had chased rumors.
Now they were following evidence.
And every clue pointed in the same direction.
Forward.
The trail continued beyond the clearing.
The students followed.
The woods grew denser.
The shadows darker.
The air cooler.
Then they heard it.
Three notes.
A trumpet.
Clear.
Beautiful.
Close.
Very close.
The sound echoed between the trees.
Then stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Jake finally whispered.
"That's definitely not a ghost."
"Thank you for that observation," Mia said.
The trumpet sounded again.
Three notes.
Pause.
Three notes.
Pause.
The same pattern they had heard all week.
This time Alyssa noticed something.
"It's a melody."
The others looked at her.
"What?"
"It isn't random."
She listened carefully.
"It's part of something."
Tyler frowned.
"What?"
Alyssa thought.
Then her eyes widened.
"No way."
"What?"
"I know that melody."
The group waited.
Alyssa looked stunned.
"My grandfather used to whistle it."
Nobody understood.
"It was our old school song."
Silence.
"What?"
"Our original fight song."
Tyler stared.
"The one they stopped using?"
Alyssa nodded.
"Years ago."
Mia quickly wrote it down.
The mystery had just become more interesting.
Every clue now connected to history.
The key.
The archive sign.
The old band camp.
The forgotten melody.
Someone wasn't simply hiding.
Someone was teaching.
The trumpet sounded again.
Closer.
Much closer.
The students followed the direction of the sound.
The trail curved around a hill.
Then suddenly ended.
The four stopped.
Ahead stood a building.
At least, it had once been a building.
Time had not been kind.
The roof sagged.
Paint peeled from the walls.
Vines crawled across the windows.
One corner leaned slightly to the side.
Yet despite its age, something felt unusual.
The front door looked recently repaired.
Fresh wood.
Fresh hinges.
Fresh paint.
Someone had been here.
Recently.
Very recently.
Tyler stared.
"Is this the archive?"
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
The trumpet sounded again.
This time it came from inside.
The four students froze.
The sound had definitely come from inside.
There was no doubt.
Alyssa's heart pounded.
Jake suddenly looked nervous.
For the first time all week.
"You know..."
he said quietly,
"...maybe we should get Director Barnes."
Nobody disagreed.
The mystery had stopped being fun.
It had become real.
Very real.
Mia stepped toward the building.
Then stopped.
Something was attached to the door.
A piece of paper.
Folded neatly.
The students approached.
Tyler carefully removed it.
Inside was a handwritten message.
Only four words.
YOU ARE ALMOST READY
Silence.
The words seemed to echo.
Almost ready.
Ready for what?
Alyssa looked toward the door.
The repaired door.
The building.
The hidden trail.
The old melody.
The forgotten history.
Everything pointed here.
Everything.
Yet something told her not to open the door.
Not yet.
The note felt like a warning.
Or perhaps an instruction.
Mia examined the paper.
Then noticed something else.
On the back.
A small drawing.
A simple symbol.
The school's mascot.
The Thunderhawk.
Exactly like the symbol engraved on Ethan's mysterious key.
Tyler slowly looked up.
His face had gone pale.
The others immediately noticed.
"What?" Alyssa asked.
Tyler swallowed.
Then pointed beyond the building.
At first nobody saw it.
Then they did.
A narrow path.
Almost completely hidden by weeds.
Leading farther into the woods.
Farther beyond the building.
Farther beyond the place they thought they were searching for.
The mystery wasn't ending.
It was growing.
And somewhere ahead, beyond the forgotten building and the hidden trail, the trumpet waited.
Calling them forward.
