Band camp is one of the most exciting weeks of the year. Friendships are formed, traditions are shared, and memories are made that students often remember for a lifetime. Social media allows students to capture and share many of those moments—but with that opportunity comes responsibility.
Before posting, students should ask themselves a simple question: "Would I be comfortable if my band director, principal, parents, future college professor, or future employer saw this post?"
If the answer is no, it probably shouldn't be posted.
What's Generally Acceptable?
Social media can be a great way to celebrate the positive aspects of band camp.
Appropriate posts might include:
- Group photos with friends
- Pictures from rehearsals, section activities, and spirit days
- Celebrating personal achievements and milestones
- Sharing excitement about performances and upcoming events
- Positive encouragement of fellow band members
- Showcasing the hard work and dedication of the band
These types of posts help build school pride and reflect positively on both the student and the organization.
What Should Be Avoided?
Students should never use social media to:
- Bully, embarrass, or ridicule another student
- Post inappropriate photos, videos, or comments
- Share private information about others without permission
- Spread rumors or gossip
- Criticize directors, staff, judges, or fellow performers
- Display unsafe behavior, vandalism, alcohol, drugs, or other inappropriate activities
- Post content that could damage the reputation of the band or school
Remember, deleting a post does not guarantee it disappears. Screenshots can last forever.
The Golden Rule
A good rule of thumb is simple: If you wouldn't say it over the microphone in front of the entire band, don't post it online.
Band camp is about teamwork, trust, and representing something bigger than yourself.
Every post contributes to your personal reputation and the reputation of your band.
